<p>I wanted to let everyone know we are changing the program a bit.  We are bringing back the six week series for the more dedicated students who need a specific time and level, but keeping some of the group lessons available for registration one at a time.  For the one at a time classes we are opening those classes up to mixed levels so we are able to accommodate more people based on time needs.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The six week series is for a more serious student who wants other students in the class to be at a similar level and can commit to being in the class.  It is like going to school for your body.  Here is the description-</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Six week series is the premier way to study Upside-Down Pilates in a group setting. These are progressive and leveled courses for the serious and dedicated Upside-Down Pilates student.  In each six weeks series we will learn a specific sequence of exercises and learn a specific piece of anatomy.  The course will be geared towards the registrants in the course.  Students must have permission to be in the level of class they desire.  MIn. 2 Max. 4 students. $180 plus tax.  No refunds or cancellations for these courses.</p>

<p>Mixed level group Upside-Down Pilates lessons are for individuals who need a more flexible schedule and want a basic overall workout without the detail of perfecting a sequence and learning anatomy.  Here is the description-</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Group Upside-Down Pilates lessons are mixed level group classes that provide an overall workout for the body.  Students must have participated in the introductory solo lesson package or level one six week series and have the studio&#8217;s permission to attend these open level group classes.  Min. 2 Max. 4 students. One Group Class $35, Six Pilates Group Classes $195, Twelve Pilates Group Classes $360.</p>

<p>Patty started with me (Lisa Orig) in October of 2012. She was referred to me by a local naturopath and was looking for a change in her exercise practice. An avid yoga participant four times per week for over 10 years, her posture had conformed to the shape of her practice. Her weight was forward on the balls of her feet. Her knees   were hyperextended or &#8220;locked&#8221; as her yoga teachers had taught her. Her feet were smashed together and constantly cramping due to weakness of her intrinsic feet muscles from her high heels. Her hips were constantly flexed and her lower back hyper-extended also due to her high heels. Her upper back was flat and under constant contraction. Her shoulder blades were pinched together, and her head was jetting forward from hours at the computer. Sixty plus years of life was sitting in her posture and she was ready to change it!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>After showing Patty what I saw and explaining that change can be hard and slow, we set out on a journey together doing 2 solo&#8217;s per week for 6 weeks. We practiced breathing, learned proper biomechanic patterns of movement, strengthened the weak deep muscles, and stretched and relaxed the tight and overused outer shell muscles of her body. At the end of the six weeks Patty was addicted and ready for more. She had become an Upside-Down Dance and Pilates Addict.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>In January of 2013, only two months later was my studio&#8217;s annual assessment period. I take pictures and reassess all solo students progress and plan for the next year. Patty&#8217;s progress was obvious and amazing! Although I could see remnants of her initial posture, one thing was clear- she was standing completely differently! Her weight was in the center of her feet, her knees were less hyperextended, her hips, shoulders, and head were all lined up through the center of her feet. To Patty&#8217;s delight, her hips had clearly toned up and her clothes were fitting looser. Patty was feeling stronger, lighter, and more alive.</p>

A Description of the Introductory Solo Lesson Package:</strong></p>
<p>Our introductory solo package is the best way to get started with Upside-Down Pilates! If you have a post rehab condition this is where you will need to start! Your first lesson will be much like a meet and greet! Arrive 10 to 15 minutes prior to your appointment time to fill out some forms that will help us learn more about you. After reviewing the forms we will do a static postural assessment and a dynamic movement assessment. If time allows we will then begin your study with learning about proper breathing techniques and pelvic mobility and stability.</p>
<p>On your second lesson we will review with you what we discovered in your static postural and a dynamic movement assessment. We will share with you what we feel needs to be strengthened, stretched, and any movement patterns that need to be retrained. We will then get started.</p>
<p>On your third lesson we will continue your study of neuromuscular efficient movement and then offer you the best course of action for you individual needs</p></div>

Whether you want to be more comfortable sitting at your computer, playing with your kids, dancing, or enjoying a favorite hobby, these gentle lessons can improve your overall well being.  It may even help you get more from your Pilates practice!<br />
Learning to move with less effort makes daily life easier. Because the Feldenkrais Method focuses on the relationship between movement and thought, increased mental awareness and creativity accompany physical improvements. Everyone, from athletes and artists to administrators and attorneys, can benefit from the Feldenkrais Method!</p>
<p><strong>Vivian Best</strong> is currently in her final year (Year 4) of Professional Training in the Feldenkrais Method® and is an Authorized Student Awareness through Movement® Teacher.  Recognized by Pacific Business News as one of Hawai&#8217;i's &#8220;40 Under 40,&#8221; and the Honolulu Star Advertiser as one of &#8220;10 Who Made a Difference&#8221; in 2010 for her work in the community, Vivian loves sharing about the Feldenkrais Method® and believes it can inspire positive change, building awareness and hope for inspired action!  Her students appreciate her joy, sensitivity to their individual needs, and playfulness.</div>

<p>Our prenatal pilates based classes are designed to help prevent and ease your pregnancy discomforts, prepare your body for the birth of your baby, and help you get your body back with ease after the baby is born.<br />
Mat, Reformer, Chair, Cadillac, arc, balance ball, and barre exercises will help you strength, stretch, and build endurance for you and your baby&#8217;s big day!  The exercises are safe for all trimesters including post delivery needs. We will focus on activating and relaxing the pelvic floor and deep abdominals, breathing, as well as upper and lower body strengthening and stretching.<br />

<div align="center"><strong>Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Patterns for the arms</strong></p>
<p><strong>Saturday, February 2, 2013</strong><br />
<strong>10am &#8211; 2pm</strong></p>
<p>Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Patterns were identified by physical therapists in the late 1940&#8242;s and early 1950&#8242;s to assist in the rehabilitation of MS and cerebral palsy patience.  In this workshop we will learn the anatomy behind PNF patterns D1 and D2 of the arms.  We will explore how applying these patterns to movement training such as dance and Pilates will increase strength, flexibility, coordination, injury prevention and resolution, and proper usage patterns in the arms.  We will further show how the PNF patterns can connect the usage of the arms into the torso or core of the body.</p>
<p>PNF porte de bras will be taught along with PNF patterns using the reformer, Pilates arc, and hand weights.  Muscles of the shoulder girdle and torso will be taught for a clearer understanding of these magnificent patterns.</p>

<p>Is it really possible? In this workshop we will explore the anatomy behind this common dance and Pilates correction by taping the bones and muscles on a full skeleton and on ourselves.  We will learn that it is anatomically impossible to keep your hips square and get your legs high.  This will help us prevent hip osteoarthritis.</p>
<p>We will learn how to use the movement of our hips in relationship to our leg to safely achieve that wonderful extension we are all looking for.</p>
<p>We will learn exercises that will strengthen the entire hip complex increasing our turnout and lifting the appearance of our gluteus maximus.</p>

<p>We have 2 new weekly <strong>Upside-Down Dance Classes with Lisa Orig</strong> happening at Ballet Hawaii (777 South Hotel Street Suite 101) starting September 11! See below for the schedule.</p>
<p>Also, our <strong>Kinesthetic Anatomy and Biomechanics Workshop</strong> premieres on September 8th! Hurry and purchase your spot because this opportunity is only one day out of the month!</p>
<p>This September&#8217;s Workshop features : &#8220;Turn out from your hips not your feet.&#8221;</p>
<p>The anatomy behind this common dance correction.  We will learn to stabilize our Sacroiliac Joint and move our leg at our hip joint.  This will prevent lower back pain, sciatica, hip and knee arthritis, and ankle sprains to name a few.  Moreover, will will become stronger and more attractive movers with a greater sense of balance!</p>
<p>In each workshop we will tape our muscles on Herman (the skeleton) and then ourselves while learning the names of the bones, muscles, joints, connective tissues, and arthrokinematics of the joints covered that day. We will learn proper biomechanics and specific neuromuscular conditioning exercises to change our less than efficient usages. This will prevent and heal injury.  NO TESTS JUST UNCOVERING THE MYSTERY OF YOUR BODY!<br />

<p>Open to all individuals who want to learn more about how their body works efficiently. Although we will be looking at our anatomy from a dance and Pilates perspective you do not need to be a dancer or Pilates Addict to join us!  Yoga Teachers, Fitness Trainers, Massage and Physical Therapists are welcome.</p>
<p>We have a <strong>Conditioning for Dancers</strong> class on Monday evenings and Saturday mornings! See below for exact times. In this class we will learn sequences from Irene Dowd, Bartenieff Fundamentals, Pilates, and Lisa Orig. This is the perfect class to fine tune your alignment and neuromuscular coordination while challenge your strength and flexibility. Held at our Upside-Down Studio, 1111 Nu&#8217;uanu Ave Suite 213.</p>
<p>Starting September 18th we will have a new <strong>Pilates for Aerial Dancers</strong> class happening on Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm at our Chinatown Upside-Down Studio! This class will focus on strengthening and stabilizing the shoulder girdle. We will challenge strength and flexibility throughout the body, while incorporating coordination through Pilates based exercises. Please note: Please purchase dance classes in our Store to participate in this class.</div>

<div><strong>We are in the process of adding dance classes to our curriculum.   Here is what is in the works.  We are looking for dance space to rent.  Please contact us if you know of anyone wanting to rent out dance space at a reasonable rate. The Dance Conditioning Classes and Anatomy Classes have already started so register now!</strong></div>
<p>Dance Technique-<br />
T/TH/SAT 10:30am-12pm, and  Wed 6:45-8:15pm<br />
Upside-Down Contemporary Modern Dance. Our warm-up will be based on conditioning sequences created by Irene Dowd.  We will apply current biomechanic principals to dance alignment and movement, practice phrase creation and performance, as well as, enjoy freedom through structure in improvisation and contact improvisation.  Knee pads, long sleeve shirt, and small hand towel recommended for class.</p>

<p>Dance Improvisation and Contact Improvisation<br />
Sat 12:15-1:45pm<br />
Whether you are an avid improver, or have no idea what dance improv is, this class is sure to be a delight.  We will learn how to quite our mind and become one with our fellow dancers.  We will focus on moving in and out of the floor with grace and control while preparing to share weight during movement.  Creating a clear structure, identifying a movement theme, and supporting your fellow dancers ideas will bring hours of movement fun both to watch and to do!  Knee pads, long sleeve shirt, and small hand towel recommended for class.</p>
<p>First Friday Improv Class and Performance<br />
First Friday&#8217;s 7-9pm<br />
The only way to learn how to dance is to dance, and the only way to learn how to perform is to perform. That is what this wonderful class is about! From 7 to 8pm we will learn or review our improvisational structure. From 8-9 we will travel through the First Friday Gallery Walk and perform the structure. The structure will be taught through out the previous month in the Saturday 12:15 dance improvisation class, and again at 7pm on First Friday. No experience in dance or improvisation is necessary, just an open mind and heart! Please wear black tennis or dance shoes, black pants you can move in, and a solid bright colored top.</p>

<p>We will tape our muscles on Herman (the skeleton) and then ourselves while learning the names of the bones, muscles, joints, connective tissues, and arthrokinematics of the joints.  We will learn proper biomechanics and specific neuromuscular conditioning exercises to change our less than efficient usages.  NO TESTS JUST UNCOVERING THE MYSTERY OF YOUR BODY!</p>
