Aloha Reader, Upside-Down Pilates Happy 81st Birthday Bernice! I am so proud of you!
Doesn’t she look amazing? I hope you find this inspiring, I certainly do! Many of you know Bernice but for those of you who don’t, she’s a retired lawyer and grandmother who did not exercise until the age of 66 when she met me. She started working with me and fell in love with movement! She credits being able to do this beautiful upside-down shape to MICRO MOVES. You see she was away in Italy for 6 months this past year but decided to do the Micro Moves online group classes along with her own sequence I created just for her. When she returned she had a deeper strength and stability than when she left. She attributed her being able to quickly get back upside-down to doing the Micro Moves classes while she was gone. It’s the small movements that create the strength and stability from deep within to be able to do the big luxurious movements. Thank you Bernice for your hard work, dedication, patience, and focus. Ninety eight percent of the battle is just showing up consistently. I always say you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t force them to drink. Not that Bernice is a horse, but she took a drink of consistent movement study and look at what happened for her! Hats off to Bernice for another year flipping around the sun! Upside-Down Nourishment The Gut-Brain Axis, Microbiome, Mood and Neuroinflammation Did you know the gut produces 95% of serotonin, 50% of dopamine and hosts the majority of GABA regulating microbes. This means our gut and gut microbiome is in charge of our happiness sleep, and clear thinking. Gut dysbiosis, short chain fatty acid depletion, and low fiber impair production of these neurotransmitters and neuropeptides. As a result of this it leads to inflammation, permeability, lipopolysaccharide translocation, and microglial activation in the brain! What does that create for you? It leads to fatigue, brain fog, inability to focus or concentrate, low mood, sleep disturbance, emotional reactivity and much more. How does that happen? Here is an example. Tryptophan is the precursor to serotonin (your happy hormone) and melatonin (your sleep hormone). Tryptophan metabolism as a result of gut dysbiosis and leaky gut shifts from becoming serotonin to becoming Kynurenine and quinolinic acid. These are neurotoxic compounds. So rather than creating the happy hormone and the sleep hormone from tryptophan your gut creates quinolinic acid which causes neurotoxicity, neurological damage, anxiety and depression. So tryptophan that is supposed to be good for you turns into something bad for you because of the change in the inflammatory environment of your central nervous system. This change comes from a loss of resilience and barrier dysfunction of the gut. To fix your fatigue, brain fog, inability to focus or concentrate, low mood, sleep disturbance, emotional reactivity, anxiety and depression you must create a resilient microbiome.
