Aloha Reader, Yesterday I was chatting with one of my clients who is 87. She was recalling how she felt when she met me at age 75. She had back pain, pain radiating down her leg, and shoulder and neck pain. That was 12 years ago. Now she has little things but no major pain. Upside-Down Nourishment Feeding our Microbiome part 2 Last week we talked about the need for healthy fats and protein to feed us, and the need for 30-40 grams of fiber per day to feed our microbiome. When we are choosing what to eat we need to think first what will I eat that will feed my body (fat and protein) then what should I eat to feed my gut bugs that help keep me healthy. In addition to healthy fats, protein, and fiber we need polyphenols. Polyphenols are naturally occurring compounds found in a wide variety of plant-based foods and beverages, including fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, nuts, seeds, whole grains, tea, coffee, and olive oil. If you have trouble digesting fibers you must start introducing them SLOWLY. This is something I help my clients learn to do. We repair their dysbiotic gut and begin feeding their microbiome. As their bodies heal they are able to tolerate the foods that feed the microbiome. Because things like antibiotics, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, alcohol, stress, sleep disturbance, and processed foods destroy our microbiome we have to go slowly to rebuild it. Below is a microbiome building shopping guide. Our goal is 30 plus unique plant foods per week and 30-40 grams of fiber per day. This feeds your microbiome. Remember that healthy fats and protein feed our bodies and are just as important as the foods that feed our microbiome. We need a balance of both!
