Upside-Down Nourishment

This week’s microbiome definition:

ACETATE

Acetate is another reason why it is important to eat 30-40 grams of fiber per day!

Acetate (also known as acetic acid) is the most abundant short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) produced in the human gut, typically comprising 50–70% of total SCFA production. It is generated by intestinal bacteria through the microbial fermentation of dietary fiber and resistant starches that escape digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract.

Once produced, acetate is absorbed into the systemic circulation, where it serves several critical physiological functions:

  • Energy Source: It acts as a primary fuel for peripheral tissues and the brain, and is used by the liver for energy metabolism.
  • Appetite Regulation: Acetate helps reduce appetite and food intake via central homeostatic mechanisms.
  • Cardiovascular Effects: Research indicates acetate can acutely lower heart rate and mean arterial pressure through sympatholytic effects.
  • Gut Health: It protects the gut epithelium by increasing tight junction proteins, thereby reducing gut permeability and inflammation.
  • Metabolic Role: Acetate stimulates adipogenesis and influences lipid synthesis, playing a key role in energy homeostasis.

While often measured alongside propionate and butyrate, acetate’s high concentration in plasma allows it to mediate many of the broader metabolic and anti-inflammatory benefits associated with SCFAs.

What does that mean for you? Acetate is produced by good bacteria when they eat fibers and polyphenols. You must eat a variety of fibers and polyphenols in order for you to be healthy!
