Upside-Down Pilates

In this episode of Upside-Down Pilates we learn how to do the Rolling Like a Ball Pilates exercise.

Our anatomy minute for the day is the Iliopsoas muscle group.

The iliopsoas is a combined deep core and hip muscle group that acts as the strongest flexor of the hip and extensor of the lumbar spine.

Component Muscles: It consists of the psoas major (originating from the lower spine/vertebrae) and the iliacus (originating from the inner surface of the pelvic bowl). A third smaller muscle, the psoas minor, is present in only about 60% of people.

Insertion: Both major components merge in the groin area and insert onto the lesser trochanter (a small bony prominence on the upper inside of the thigh bone or femur).

Function: It pulls the thigh upward toward the torso and the torso to the thigh, supports core stability, helps maintain upright posture, and assists with external rotation of the hip

At Home Blood Testing!

It can be really difficult to get your doctor to order the labs you really need. Moreover, tracking your blood work regularly over time keeps your eye on the prize of healthy living.

Take thyroid for example. Everybody knows you need to have a Free T3 reading to truly know if your thyroid is working properly. Most doctors just order TSH and maybe a Free T4 if you are lucky. That does not tell us enough to know if you have thyroid hormone available for your cells to use. You need to know if you body is able to process the T4 and turn it into T3. Much of that processing is done via your gut microbiome and your liver. T3 is the active form of thyroid hormone your body actually uses.

Why doesn’t your doctor test for Free T3 on a regular basis? Because they do not have a treatment to help fix your gut or your liver. They can only prescribe T4 replacement if you have thyroid issue. If you have a good doctor they may test for T3 and prescribe T3 to help. That is not the norm though. Those doctors still do not help heal your gut and repair you liver.

The good news is now you can get your T3 tested on a regular basis and not have to pester your doctor to order the test for you! Iron and vitamin D levels are important to make sure your body is processing T4 to T3 efficiently. You can test for those right at home too!

Other markers I find important that are rarely tested are ApoB (Advanced Cholesterol), hsCRP (Inflammation), and Fructosamine (Average Blood Sugar).

Regardless, having a regular look at your blood work and learning to understand what the markers actually mean puts you in the drivers seat for your health. This test can be taken monthly or you can skip up to three months in a row and do it quarterly. It is easy, inexpensive, at home, and ships to HAWAII too.
